How to prepare a pallet for urgent collection
When a job is booked urgently, the vehicle is often already close by and moving fast to reach you — which means there's very little slack if the pallet itself isn't ready to go the moment the driver arrives. A few minutes of prep beforehand avoids the most common causes of delay at pickup.
Before the driver arrives
- Wrap it properly. Shrink-wrap or strap the load securely to the pallet — loose or unstable goods are one of the most common reasons a driver has to stop and re-secure a load before it can travel, costing time you don't have on an urgent job.
- Label it clearly. A visible delivery address and contact name on the outside of the load saves confusion at both ends, especially if the driver is also carrying other consignments.
- Check the weight matches what you quoted. If the actual weight is significantly different from what was described on the phone, it can affect which vehicle is suitable — better to flag this at booking than discover it at the door.
- Have paperwork ready. Delivery notes, any special handling instructions, or reference numbers should be to hand, not being printed as the driver waits.
Access and location
Make sure whoever is collecting can actually reach the pallet without needing keys, codes, or a specific person who might not be immediately available. On urgent jobs, a driver waiting at a locked gate or an empty reception desk eats directly into the time you paid to save.
A useful habit: treat the collection window like a meeting you can't be late for. The vehicle being on time only helps if the pallet is genuinely ready the moment it arrives.
What to tell the dispatcher upfront
- Ground floor or upstairs, and whether there's a lift or loading bay
- Whether a pallet truck or tail-lift will be needed
- Any site-specific access requirements (security check-in, restricted hours, PPE)
None of this is complicated, but flagging it at the point of booking rather than leaving the driver to discover it is what actually keeps urgent jobs running on time.
